Jake Gyllenhaal is the 'Prince of Persia'

The Hollywood Reporter is reporting Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton have signed on to star in Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films' The Price of Persia: Sands of Time, based on Ubisoft's venerable and wildly successful game franchise.

Gyllenhaal will step into the role of Dastan, a young prince living in circa sixth century Persia. After a nobleman with ill intent goes after the Sands of Time, which has the ability to reverse time, Dastan must pair with fiesty Tamina (Arterton) on a quest to stop him.

Prince of Persia: Sands of Time is set to go in front of the lens in July for a 2009 release. Mike Newell of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire has been tapped to direct.

Odds are favorable that Ubisoft is already deep into developing a new game based on the film, which we'd expect to see on Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 for starters. With any luck, Ubisoft will make an official announcement soon or by E3 in July at the latest.
